Forensic Context

A study in humans with coronary artery disease identified the miR-3189-5p as a biomarker for recurrent myocardial infarction risk, where it was downregulated in whole blood of patients with recurrent MI compared to those without, remaining significant after false-discovery rate correction (FDR <0.1) [Onuoha et al. DOI:10.1111/cts.13307]. Another study in humans found that the miR-3189-5p is differentially expressed within monozygotic twin pairs, being shared across two pairs of twins, which supports its potential role in forensic identification for distinguishing genetically identical individuals [Xiao et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2019.05.003].
