A study in humans identified the mir-320b-1 as a differentially expressed miRNA that was upregulated in sepsis patients compared to healthy controls [Qin et al. DOI:10.1097/JCMA.0000000000000209]. A systematic review of human studies found the mir-320b-1 is associated with multiple environmental exposures, showing a positive association with traffic-related air pollution intensity in plasma, a negative association with specific metals in plasma from coke oven workers, and significant associations with persistent organic pollutant exposure in buffy coats and with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites in plasma [Kotsyfakis et al. DOI:10.1080/1354750X.2019.1652348]. A study in humans with alcohol use disorders identified the mir-320b-1 as a serum microRNA biomarker significantly increased by 137.1% in AUD subjects compared to controls [Ignacio et al. DOI:10.1186/S12868-015-0195-X]. This finding was validated in cross-species paradigms, and a review of RNA biomarkers for AUD confirmed the mir-320b-1 is upregulated in AUD serum [Ferguson et al. DOI:10.3389/Fnmol.2022.1032362].
