A study in humans demonstrated that hsa-miR-324 was significantly down-regulated in the prefrontal cortex of depressed suicide subjects compared to non-psychiatric controls [Smalheiser et al. DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0033201]. In a separate human study of severe trauma, the mir-324 showed a direct correlation with TLR3 gene expression in the whole blood of severely injured patients [Uhlich et al. DOI:10.1016/j.surg.2014.06.017]. A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-324 is significantly upregulated in patients with plaque rupture compared to those with plaque erosion in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, where a diagnostic model combining it with two other miRNAs achieved an area under the curve of 0.768 in an independent test set [Li et al. DOI:10.1016/j.ygeno.2020.11.019]. Separately, a forensic investigation in humans established that the mir-324 is negatively correlated with aging in blood samples, and its combination with other small RNAs in a gradient boosting model enabled age estimation with a mean absolute error of 3.171 years [Fang et al. DOI:10.1007/s00414-023-03028-8].
