A review of human studies identified 197 miRNAs associated with wound healing, burn wound healing, and scarring, with specific expression patterns validated in human skin tissue samples and cell lines using qRT-PCR, microarrays, and next-generation sequencing [Siu et al. DOI:10.1111/wrr.13100]. A study in humans demonstrated that miR-324-3p is significantly upregulated in the plasma of patients with plaque rupture compared to those with plaque erosion, forming a diagnostic panel with an area under the curve of 0.768 for distinguishing these phenotypes in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction [Li et al. DOI:10.1016/j.ygeno.2020.11.019]. In a separate forensic investigation on human blood samples, miR-324-3p miR-324-3p was identified as being negatively correlated with donor age and was incorporated into a machine learning model for age estimation, which achieved a mean absolute error of 3.171 years [Fang et al. DOI:10.1007/s00414-023-03028-8].
