A study in human forensic samples demonstrated that hsa-miR-122-5p exhibits pronounced separation properties for liver tissue identification, with no expression overlap in individual native samples except for one potential outlier lung swab, achieving 100% correct classification in native samples and 96% in dried swabs during validation [Sauer et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2017.02.002]. The method was successfully applied to realistic forensic samples including mixtures, aged material, and mock casework samples from experimental shootings and stabbings, where liver was correctly identified even as a minor component in mixtures.
