Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the miR-34b-5p was significantly decreased in the prefrontal cortex of antidepressant-free depressed suicide subjects compared to non-psychiatric controls [Smalheiser et al. DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0033201]. In human skin burn and wound healing contexts, the miR-34b-5p was upregulated in venous ulcers compared to normal skin and acute wounds [Siu et al. DOI:10.1111/wrr.13100]. A study in mice demonstrated that the miR-34b-5p is a predictive biomarker for survival and tissue injury following whole thorax irradiation, with early plasma upregulation associated with reduced survival in C57Bl/6 mice and linked to TGF-β/SMAD signaling pathways [Rogers et al. DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0232411]. In human male infertility research, the miR-34b-5p was found to be downregulated in testicular biopsies of azoospermic patients and demonstrated high diagnostic value with an AUC of 0.944 [Doghish et al. DOI:10.1007/s00210-024-03594-7].
