Forensic Context

A study in humans with coronary artery disease identified 164 miRNAs differentially expressed in whole blood between patients with and without recurrent myocardial infarction, with 69 remaining significant after false-discovery rate correction, and found whole blood to be a superior sample source compared to plasma for miRNA profiling related to thrombotic risk [Onuoha et al. DOI:10.1111/cts.13307]. A study in humans identified the miR-340-5p as upregulated in plasma from coronary artery disease patients, with RNA sequencing revealing it among 119 upregulated microRNAs and subsequent qRT-PCR validation in an expanded cohort confirming its significant diagnostic value [Zhong et al. DOI:10.1002/jcla.23020]. In Wistar rats, exposure to heroin induced a 2.03-fold upregulation of the miR-340-5p specifically in the ventral tegmental area, as determined by next-generation miRNA sequencing [Pence et al. DOI:10.1007/S00221-024-06972-Y].
