Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that hsa-miR-342-5p was upregulated in septic shock patients compared to healthy controls and was highlighted for a crucial role in septic shock [Li et al. DOI:10.1038/s41598-025-89946-6]. A study in mice demonstrated that the mir-342 was upregulated in plasma following hindlimb irradiation and was part of an eight-microRNA signature that could segregate animals by local radiation injury severity, with the mir-342 specifically influencing the separation of the high-dose (80 Gy) group and showing a positive correlation with injury severity [Ancel et al. DOI:10.1038/s41598-024-52258-2]. In a human forensic autopsy case, the expression of the mir-342 was measured in plasma and hippocampal tissue from a sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) case compared to control cases, though no significant expression differences were found for this specific miRNA in that context [De Matteis et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Legalmed.2017.12.003].
