Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-1224 was upregulated 11.19-fold in denatured dermis from deep burn patients compared to paired normal skin [Liang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.burns.2011.10.014]. A subsequent review confirmed its upregulation 4 days post-burn in deep partial thickness burn skin and noted its dysregulation in burn hypertrophic scar tissue, with expression patterns varying between studies [Siu et al. DOI:10.1111/wrr.13100]. A study in mice demonstrated that the mir-1224 in urine could be used as an early radiation-responsive marker of radiation nephropathy [Jia et al. DOI:10.3389/fcell.2022.861451]. In a separate investigation across three inbred mouse strains (C3H/HeJ, BALB/c, and C57BL/6), the mir-1224 was identified as an important miRNA in decision tree models for classifying low versus high radiation dose at day 7 and for classifying viable versus high-risk subjects at day 1 post-irradiation [Martello et al. DOI:10.1667/RADE-23-00007.1].
