A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-374a is significantly decreased in the plasma of male acute myocardial infarction patients compared to healthy controls, as identified by next-generation sequencing and validated by RT-qPCR, representing its first reported association with this condition [Baulina et al. In a separate investigation of physiologically unaffected human individuals, the mir-374a was found to be significantly negatively correlated with age in peripheral whole blood [Meder et al. DOI:10.1373/clinchem.2014.224238]. A study in human newborns demonstrated that the mir-374a is downregulated in umbilical cord blood of newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, indicating its role as a biomarker for hypoxic events [Lai et al.
