A study in full-term human newborns demonstrated that the miR-384 was downregulated in plasma at 0–6 hours after birth in cases of perinatal asphyxia compared to healthy controls, as identified via next-generation sequencing [Lai et al. DOI:10.1016/j.pedneo.2024.05.002]. A systematic review of substance abuse literature reported that the miR-384 is downregulated in the peripheral blood of newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and is also downregulated following acute cocaine use in an Ago2-dependent manner, playing a role in neural plasticity and motivation [Occhipinti et al.
