Summary

This gene encodes the alpha chain of type XXI collagen, a member of the FACIT (fibril-associated collagens with interrupted helices) collagen family. Type XXI collagen is localized to tissues containing type I collagen and maintains the integrity of the extracellular matrix. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. Forensic Context

A study in humans using single-nucleus RNA sequencing of left ventricular tissue from ischemic cardiomyopathy patients identified COL21A1 as a druggable gene downregulated in end-stage heart failure alongside other cardiomyopathies [Simonson et al. DOI:10.1016/j.celrep.2023.112086]. In porcine skin, microarray analysis following sulfur mustard or thermal burn injury showed COL21A1 was significantly decreased at seven days postexposure [Price et al. DOI:10.080/15569520903097754].
