This gene encodes a member of the catenin family of proteins that play an important role in cell adhesion process by connecting cadherins located on the plasma membrane to the actin filaments inside the cell. The encoded mechanosensing protein contains three vinculin homology domains and undergoes conformational changes in response to cytoskeletal tension, resulting in the reconfiguration of cadherin-actin filament connections. Certain mutations in this gene cause butterfly-shaped pigment dystrophy. [provided by RefSeq, May 2016]
A study in human umbilical vein endothelial cells and patient blood samples demonstrated that the CTNNA1 is significantly up-regulated in lipopolysaccharide-induced sepsis and its knockdown partially reverses the LPS-induced suppression of VE-cadherin, reduces endothelial permeability, and high expression correlates with poor overall survival in patients [Liao et al. DOI:10.3389/fgene.2022.1002344]. A study in humans demonstrated that the CTNNA1 was up-regulated by 36% in pericontusional brain tissue from a traumatic brain injury patient (T4) compared to control tissue, as identified through cDNA microarray analysis [Michael et al. DOI:10.1016/j.jocn.2004.11.003].
