Summary

This gene encodes a member of the desmocollin protein subfamily. Desmocollins, along with desmogleins, are cadherin-like transmembrane glycoproteins that are major components of the desmosome. Desmosomes are cell-cell junctions that help resist shearing forces and are found in high concentrations in cells subject to mechanical stress. This gene is found in a cluster with other desmocollin family members on chromosome 18. Mutations in this gene are associated with arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia-11, and reduced protein expression has been described in several types of cancer. Forensic Context

A study in human and mouse models of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy demonstrated that the DSC2 is a desmosomal intercalated disc component with markedly reduced protein levels and junctional localization in affected human hearts [Chen et al. DOI:10.1161/CIRCRESAHA.114.302810]. A separate bioinformatics analysis in human cardiomyopathy identified the DSC2 as a gene with mutations present before cardiac failure, though it was not experimentally studied in that work [Rahman et al. DOI:10.1038/s41598-024-78011-3]. A study in human sepsis patients identified the DSC2 as a protein-coding gene located in quadrant 5 of a nine-quadrant analysis, indicating that both its co-expressed mRNA and corresponding protein were not differentially expressed between the sepsis group and normal controls [Wang et al.
