The protein encoded by this gene is a low affinity receptor for the Fc region of immunoglobulin gamma complexes. The encoded protein is involved in the phagocytosis of immune complexes and in the regulation of antibody production by B-cells. Variations in this gene may increase susceptibilty to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Several transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jun 2010] CIViC Summary for FCGR2B Gene
A study in C57BL/6J mice using a closed head weight-drop model demonstrated that mild traumatic brain injury induces significant transcriptional upregulation of the FCGR2B in the ipsilateral neocortex three days post-injury, with a 3.0-fold increase, indicating its role in the inflammatory and immune response to neural trauma [Israelsson et al. DOI:10.1089/neu.2008.0676].
