This gene encodes a tyrosine kinase receptor for vascular endothelial growth factors C and D. The protein is thought to be involved in lymphangiogenesis and maintenance of the lymphatic endothelium. Forensic Context

A study in humans and mice demonstrated that FLT4 is a marker for lymphatic endothelial cells, used to annotate the lymphatic endothelial cell cluster in myocardial infarction tissue [Kuppe et al. DOI:10.1038/s41586-022-05060-x]. A study in rats demonstrated that VEGFR-3 mRNA and protein expression were upregulated early following cortical cold-injury, with a ~3-fold mRNA increase on day 0.5 post-injury and increased endothelial immunoreactivity in pial and intracerebral vessels on days 0.5 and 2, decreasing thereafter and becoming absent by day 6 [Nag et al.
