The protein encoded by this gene is a Golgi stack membrane protein that is involved in the creation of sialyl-Lewis X, an E-selectin ligand. Mutations in this gene are a cause of fucosyltransferase-6 deficiency. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
A study in humans identified the FUT6 as a highly specific mRNA candidate for vaginal secretion identification, where it was expressed at higher levels in vaginal secretions compared to saliva (average 9-fold difference) and showed cross-reactivity in only 1 of 15 saliva samples tested, making it more suitable for a quantitative qRT-PCR assay format [Hanson et al. DOI:10.1016/j.scijus.2012.03.007]. Subsequent research established an 18-cSNP typing system for vaginal secretions incorporating the FUT6, which contains cSNPs rs3916080 and rs9807877, and demonstrated the system's high sensitivity and specificity for identifying the donor in mixture stains, with a detection limit of 0.08 ng RNA and the ability to detect a minor vaginal secretion contributor at ratios as low as 1:10 to 1:500 [Zhang et al.
