Summary

GABA is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain where it acts at GABA-A receptors, which are ligand-gated chloride channels. Chloride conductance of these channels can be modulated by agents such as benzodiazepines that bind to the GABA-A receptor. At least 16 distinct subunits of GABA-A receptors have been identified. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2013]

A study in humans demonstrated that the GABRA2 mRNA showed no significant change in expression in the hippocampal dentate gyrus, orbitofrontal cortex, or dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of individuals with alcohol dependence compared to controls [Jin et al. DOI:10.3389/Fncel.2011.00030]. In a separate review of human postmortem brain studies, the GABRA2 gene was identified as having lower expression in the hippocampus of alcoholics and a strong association with alcohol dependence in meta-analysis [Warden et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Neuropharm.2017.02.017].
