The protein encoded by this gene has been termed a 'growth' or 'plasticity' protein because it is expressed at high levels in neuronal growth cones during development and axonal regeneration. This protein is considered a crucial component of an effective regenerative response in the nervous system. A study in humans demonstrated that the GAP43 mRNA was down-regulated by 56% in pericontusional brain tissue from a patient with traumatic brain injury [Michael et al. In a mouse model of traumatic spinal cord injury, inhibition of the upregulated circular RNA circAbca1 led to an increase in the GAP43 protein expression, suggesting a role in axon growth and regeneration [Wang et al.
