This gene encodes a member of the GTPases of immunity-associated proteins (GIMAP) family. GIMAP proteins contain GTP-binding and coiled-coil motifs, and may play roles in the regulation of cell survival. Decreased expression of this gene may play a role in non-small cell lung cancer. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed for this gene, which is found in a cluster with seven additional GIMAP genes on the long arm of chromosome 7. Forensic Context
A longitudinal mRNA expression analysis in human post-mortem blood samples demonstrated that the GIMAP6 is down-regulated after death and was incorporated into a post-mortem interval (PMI) prediction model with a negative coefficient, where the model achieved a root mean square error of 4.75 hours [Antiga et al. DOI:10.1038/s41598-021-96095-z]. Separately, a study in humans and mice identified the GIMAP6 as a significantly down-regulated clinical diagnostic biomarker in acute myocardial infarction, showing cell-type-specific expression in endothelial cells and macrophages [Li et al. DOI:10.1038/s41598-025-94820-6].
