This gene encodes a protein that is highly similar to the mouse cGMP-dependent protein kinase anchoring protein 42kDa. The mouse protein has been found to localize with the Golgi and recruit cGMP-dependent protein kinase I alpha to the Golgi in mouse testes. It is thought to play a role in germ cell development. A study in humans demonstrated that the GKAP1 is a single-gene blood biomarker capable of differentiating healthy controls from methamphetamine-dependent individuals [Breen et al. DOI:10.1038/tp.2016.67]. A separate longitudinal thanatotranscriptomic study in humans found the GKAP1 is upregulated in post-mortem blood, involved in positive regulation of the insulin receptor signaling pathway, and its expression pattern contributes to a generalized linear model for post-mortem interval estimation [Antiga et al.
