The protein encoded by this gene is an alpha subunit of guanine nucleotide binding proteins (G proteins). The encoded protein contains the guanine nucleotide binding site and is involved in the hormonal regulation of adenylate cyclase. Several transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2013] CIViC Summary for GNAI2 Gene
Forensic Context
A study in mice demonstrated that the GNAI2 was down-regulated in kidney tissue at 8 hours (0.495-fold) and 24 hours (0.480-fold) following whole-body irradiation with 10 Gy γ-rays, identifying it as a metabolism marker involved in the response to ionizing radiation [Zhao et al. DOI:10.1158/1078-0432.CCR-05-2418].
