Summary

The product of this gene is a member of the saposin-like protein (SAPLIP) family and is located in the cytotoxic granules of T cells, which are released upon antigen stimulation. This protein is present in cytotoxic granules of cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer cells, and it has antimicrobial activity against M. tuberculosis and other organisms. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the GNLY is a lysosome-related gene whose expression was significantly higher in peripheral blood from normal controls compared to sepsis patients, and high expression correlated with a higher 28-day survival rate in sepsis patients, with single-cell RNA sequencing localizing its high expression specifically to T cells and NK cells [Chen et al. DOI:10.1186/s12865-023-00588-7]. A review of mouse and human studies noted that the GNLY is an effector molecule from CD8+ T-cells that promotes apoptosis and endothelial cell shedding, leading to plaque erosion [Xinxin Bian et al. DOI:10.3892/mmr.2025.13680].
