This gene encodes a member of the guanine nucleotide-binding protein (G protein)-coupled receptor kinase subfamily of the Ser/Thr protein kinase family. The protein phosphorylates the activated forms of G protein-coupled receptors thus initiating its deactivation. This gene has been linked to both genetic and acquired hypertension. A study in mice demonstrated that the GRK4 transcript increased in abundance within 0.5 hours postmortem [Pozhitkov et al. DOI:10.1098/rsob.160267]. In a subsequent forensic validation study, the GRK4 was part of a seven-gene set from mouse brain that accurately predicted postmortem interval (PMI) using linear regression, yielding an R² of 0.95 and a slope of 0.87 between predicted and actual times [Hunter et al.
