Summary

The protein encoded by this gene is an omega class glutathione S-transferase (GST) with glutathione-dependent thiol transferase and dehydroascorbate reductase activities. GSTs are involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics and carcinogens. The encoded protein acts as a homodimer and is found in the cytoplasm. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2010]

Forensic Context

A study in humans identified the GSTO1 as a highly expressed core gene in sepsis patients, localized to macrophages and involved in inflammatory and immune responses [Wang et al. DOI:10.2147/IDR.S380137]. A separate review of human studies noted the GSTO1 is part of a six-protein panel, analyzed via UPLC-MS/MS, demonstrating high diagnostic accuracy for sudden cardiac death risk in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy [Raluca-Maria Cătinas; Sorin Hostiuc DOI:10.3390/ijms26146818]. A separate review of human forensic studies reported that the GSTO1 is part of a validated six-protein panel, analyzed via UPLC-MS/MS, which demonstrates high diagnostic accuracy for assessing sudden cardiac death risk in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy [Raluca-Maria Cătinas et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms26146818].
