Summary

Soluble guanylate cyclases are heterodimeric proteins that catalyze the conversion of GTP to 3',5'-cyclic GMP and pyrophosphate. The protein encoded by this gene is an alpha subunit of this complex and it interacts with a beta subunit to form the guanylate cyclase enzyme, which is activated by nitric oxide. Several transcript variants encoding a few different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2012]

Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that a transcriptomic signature of obesity, which includes the GUCY1A1, strongly correlates with body mass index (R = 0.63, p = 2.87 × 10⁻⁷¹) and fat mass (R = 0.61, p = 6.46 × 10⁻⁶⁶) in subcutaneous adipose tissue from 626 twin samples [Francesc Font-Clos et al. DOI:10.1088/1361-6579/aab85a]. Furthermore, within monozygotic twin pairs, changes in this signature, including the GUCY1A1, correlated with changes in BMI (R = 0.59, p = 2.55 × 10⁻¹³) and fat mass (R = 0.66, p = 1.42 × 10⁻¹⁷), indicating the observed gene expression alterations are primarily associated with environment and lifestyle rather than genetic background.
