This gene belongs to the subfamily of ubiquitously expressed heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs). The hnRNPs are RNA binding proteins and they complex with heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA). These proteins are associated with pre-mRNAs in the nucleus and appear to influence pre-mRNA processing and other aspects of mRNA metabolism and transport. While all of the hnRNPs are present in the nucleus, some seem to shuttle between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. The hnRNP proteins have distinct nucleic acid binding properties. The protein encoded by this gene can act as a tetramer and is involved in the assembly of 40S hnRNP particles. A study in mice demonstrated that the HNRNPC exhibited higher expression across all cell types in the ARDS microenvironment and its higher expression was associated with a lower overall survival rate in sepsis patients [Zhang et al. DOI:10.1186/s41065-025-00480-x]. In human skin, the HNRNPC was identified as a significantly downregulated m6A regulator following severe burn injury, a finding validated by qRT-PCR [Ran et al. DOI:10.3390/jpm13010150]. A study in mice demonstrated that the HNRNPC mRNA was down-regulated (0.17-fold) in bone marrow cells 6 hours after a whole-body 6.5 Gy ionizing radiation exposure [Dai et al. DOI:10.1080/09553000600857389].
