Heat Shock 70kD Protein 12B
The protein encoded by this gene contains an atypical heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) ATPase domain and is therefore a distant member of the mammalian Hsp70 family. This gene may be involved in susceptibility to atherosclerosis. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2015]
Forensic Context
A study in human postmortem cerebellar tissue demonstrated that the HSPA12B mRNA was significantly downregulated in individuals who died from severe frontal cortex traumatic brain injury compared to a reference group who died from natural causes [Schober et al. DOI:10.1007/s00414-014-1129-3]. The combination of the HSPA12B with FOSB mRNA completely discriminated the two groups with 100% concordance in a logistic regression model, a finding unaltered by confounders such as age, survival time, and postmortem interval.
