Summary

The protein encoded by this gene is a type I membrane protein that forms one of the two chains of a receptor for interferons alpha and beta. Binding and activation of the receptor stimulates Janus protein kinases, which in turn phosphorylate several proteins, including STAT1 and STAT2. Forensic Context

A study in mice demonstrated that the IFNAR1 is upregulated in meningeal macrophages one week post-traumatic brain injury in young animals and is also upregulated in aged meninges, as validated by qPCR and bulk RNA-seq [Bolte et al. DOI:10.7554/eLife.81154]. In human sepsis, bioinformatic analysis identified the IFNAR1 as an upregulated diagnostic marker in blood samples from septic patients [Sun et al. DOI:10.3389/fgene.2024.1389630]. A study in human postmortem renal tissue demonstrated that the immunohistochemical expression of the IFNAR1 was significantly more intense in cases of saltwater drowning compared to freshwater drowning and control deaths by gunshot [Barranco et al. DOI:10.1007/S00414-020-02274-4].
