The protein encoded by this gene is an accessory subunit of the heterodimeric receptor for interleukin 18 (IL18), a proinflammatory cytokine involved in inducing cell-mediated immunity. This protein enhances the IL18-binding activity of the IL18 receptor and plays a role in signaling by IL18. Mutations in this gene are associated with Crohn's disease and inflammatory bowel disease, and susceptibility to celiac disease and leprosy. Alternatively spliced transcript variants of this gene have been described, but their full-length nature is not known. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2014]
A study in human skin tissue from burn patients demonstrated that the IL18RAP was expressed in a cluster of burn tissue γδ T cells (Vδ2 subset) [Labuz et al. DOI:10.7554/eLife.82626]. A separate microarray analysis of human skin after thermal injury found that the IL18RAP gene was significantly up-regulated in burned tissue compared to normal skin [Greco et al. DOI:10.1016/j.burns.2009.06.211]. A study in humans demonstrated that IL-18RAP mRNA expression was increased in septic patients compared to those with systemic inflammatory response syndrome and healthy controls [Ma et al. DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0075918]. In a rat model of radiation-induced lung injury, single-cell transcriptomic analysis identified the IL18RAP as an orthologous gene associated with inflammatory processes [Shi et al.
