This gene encodes a cytokine receptor that belongs to the interleukin-1 receptor family. The encoded protein is a receptor for interleukin-1 alpha, interleukin-1 beta, and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist. It is an important mediator involved in many cytokine-induced immune and inflammatory responses. This gene is located in a cluster of related cytokine receptor genes on chromosome 2q12. Forensic Context
A study in rhesus macaques identified the IL1R1 as a shared upregulated differentially expressed gene in left ventricular tissue from animals with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy compared to adult human HCM cases [Rivas et al. DOI:10.1038/s41598-024-82770-4]. In human corpus cavernosum, single-cell transcriptome analysis characterized the IL1R1 as a specific marker highly expressed in the EC2 endothelial subcluster [Zhao et al. DOI:10.1038/s41467-022-31950-9]. A study in humans and rats demonstrated that ultraviolet-B irradiation induces significant transcriptional changes in skin, with the IL1R1 being upregulated in both species (fold change 32.5 in human and 26.6 in rat skin) at the peak of hyperalgesia [Dawes et al.
