The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the interleukin 1 cytokine family. This cytokine can bind to, and may be a ligand for interleukin 18 receptor (IL18R1/IL-1Rrp). This cytokine also binds to interleukin 18 binding protein (IL18BP), an inhibitory binding protein of interleukin 18 (IL18), and subsequently forms a complex with IL18 receptor beta subunit, and through which it inhibits the activity of IL18. This gene along with eight other interleukin 1 family genes form a cytokine gene cluster on chromosome 2. Five alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been reported. A study in humans demonstrated that the biomarker [IL37] serves as a skin marker for body fluid identification, with an average read count of 4,593 in skin tissue total RNA and 5,544 in surface skin swabs, detected in 2/3 and 2/6 donors respectively [Hanson et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2018.02.020]. A study in humans demonstrated that the biomarker IL1F7 is a highly specific and sensitive mRNA marker for skin identification, detected down to 5 pg of input total skin RNA with no cross-reactivity observed with blood, semen, saliva, vaginal secretions, or menstrual blood at optimal inputs, and only weak expression was found in kidney tissue [Hanson et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2012.01.004]. In a collaborative exercise analyzing human contact traces, IL1F7 was part of a skin-specific pentaplex and was detected in high-input skin samples but showed inconsistent detection in low-template contact traces [Haas et al.
