Summary
The protein encoded by this gene is a signal transducer shared by many cytokines, including interleukin 6 (IL6), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), and oncostatin M (OSM). This protein functions as a part of the cytokine receptor complex. The activation of this protein is dependent upon the binding of cytokines to their receptors. vIL6, a protein related to IL6 and encoded by the Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, can bypass the interleukin 6 receptor (IL6R) and directly activate this protein. Knockout studies in mice suggest that this gene plays a critical role in regulating myocyte apoptosis. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described. Forensic Context
A study in mice demonstrated that the IL6ST gene was upregulated in spleen leukocytes in common across three models of injury and inflammation (trauma/hemorrhage, burn, and LPS infusion) at a 2-hour post-injury time point, as part of a cohort of 46 commonly differentially expressed spleen genes validated by RT-PCR [Brownstein et al. DOI:10.1152/physiolgenomics.00213.2005]. A study in mice demonstrated that the IL6ST was up-regulated in gastrocnemius muscle at 1 and 3 days after local burn injury and at 1 and 2 days after distant burn injury [Padfield et al. DOI:10.01.ta.0000230567.56797.6c]. In a separate study in rats, the IL6ST was identified as a significantly altered signaling gene in liver tissue on day 1 following a 20% total body surface area burn injury, with its expression change validated by quantitative RT-PCR [Jayaraman et al. DOI:10.1016/j.jss.2007.05.025].
