Summary

The importin-alpha/beta complex and the GTPase Ran mediate nuclear import of proteins with a classical nuclear localization signal. The protein encoded by this gene is a member of a class of approximately 20 potential Ran targets that share a sequence motif related to the Ran-binding site of importin-beta. This protein binds to the nuclear pore complex and, along with RanGTP and RANBP1, inhibits the GAP stimulation of the Ran GTPase. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2010]

Forensic Context

A study in human forensic autopsy cases demonstrated that the IPO8 was used as one of three validated reference genes (alongside PES1 and POLR2A) for accurate normalization of RT-qPCR data in molecular pathology investigations of brain edema following severe burns [Wang et al. DOI:10.1007/S00414-013-0868-X]. Further research in human cases of methamphetamine intoxication also utilized the IPO8 as part of the same validated reference gene set for reliable mRNA quantification of blood-brain barrier-related markers [Wang et al. DOI:10.1007/S00414-014-0972-6].
