Summary

This gene encodes a member of the interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase protein family. Members of this family are essential components of the Toll/IL-R immune signal transduction pathways. This protein is primarily expressed in monocytes and macrophages and functions as a negative regulator of Toll-like receptor signaling. Mutations in this gene are associated with a susceptibility to asthma. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, May 2010]

Forensic Context

A study in humans identified the IRAK3 as significantly upregulated in blood samples from patients with infective endocarditis and sepsis, demonstrating excellent diagnostic performance with an AUC > 0.781 [Chen et al. DOI:10.3389/fimmu.2023.1298041]. In a separate human study on cardiovascular disease progression, the IRAK3 was downregulated in myocardial fibrosis versus acute myocardial infarction and upregulated in heart failure versus myocardial fibrosis, showing potential diagnostic value for both acute myocardial infarction and heart failure [Wang et al. DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2021.664044].
