This gene encodes interferon regulatory factor 7, a member of the interferon regulatory transcription factor (IRF) family. It has been shown to play a role in the transcriptional activation of virus-inducible cellular genes, including interferon beta chain genes. Inducible expression of IRF7 is largely restricted to lymphoid tissue. The encoded protein plays an important role in the innate immune response against DNA and RNA viruses. A study in humans identified the IRF7 as a key hub protein from a protein-protein interaction network, demonstrating a unique function in controlling stress-induced cardiomyopathy and controlling type I interferon responses that worsen chronic inflammation in the heart [Rahman et al. DOI:10.1038/s41598-024-78011-3]. In a rat model of radiation-induced lung injury, the IRF7 was identified as an orthologous gene associated with inflammatory processes [Shi et al. DOI:10.17305/bb.2024.10357]. A study in rats demonstrated that the IRF7 is upregulated in the cerebral cortex at 6 and 12 hours following traumatic brain injury, with its expression profile suggesting a role in the inflammatory response that precedes and mediates subsequent apoptotic cell death [Shojo et al.
