The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the superfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes. ABC genes are divided into seven distinct subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White). This protein is a member of the White subfamily. It is involved in macrophage cholesterol and phospholipids transport, and may regulate cellular lipid homeostasis in other cell types. Six alternative splice variants have been identified. Forensic Context
A study in humans demonstrated that plasma exosomal microRNA-4516, microRNA-203, and secretory frizzled-related protein 1 (SFRP1) levels were significantly elevated in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) compared to healthy controls and exhibited high diagnostic efficiency for AMI, with area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.9809, 0.6823, and 0.9603, respectively [Liu et al.
