The protein encoded by this intronless gene is a member of the JUN family, and a functional component of the AP1 transcription factor complex. This protein has been proposed to protect cells from p53-dependent senescence and apoptosis. A study in humans demonstrated that JUND, a housekeeping gene in the signaling and communication class, was differentially expressed between a male monozygotic twin pair and was also listed among the top 15 most highly expressed housekeeping genes with a low coefficient of variation across individuals [Sharma et al. In a separate investigation of severe burns, the related gene JUN was significantly upregulated in burn tissue in a mouse model, identifying it as a potential therapeutic target [Guo et al.
