This gene is located on the X chromosome and is the corresponding locus to a Y-linked gene which encodes a tetratricopeptide repeat (TPR) protein. The encoded protein of this gene contains a JmjC-domain and catalyzes the demethylation of tri/dimethylated histone H3. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Apr 2014] CIViC Summary for KDM6A Gene
Forensic Context
A study in C57BL/6J mice demonstrated that gastrulation-stage alcohol exposure induced craniofacial malformations at similar rates and severity in both sexes, though growth deficits were more prevalent in females [Boschen et al. DOI:10.1002/Bdr2.2292]. A study in mice demonstrated that the KDM6A transcript was significantly upregulated in the hippocampus following postnatal maternal separation stress (beta=4.59, p=1.66e-04) and the combined treatment of prenatal ethanol exposure plus postnatal stress (beta=4.20, p=5.79e-04) [Alberry et al. DOI:10.1186/S11689-020-09316-3].
