This gene encodes a kinesin-like protein that functions as a microtubule-dependent molecular motor. The encoded protein can depolymerize microtubules at the plus end, thereby promoting mitotic chromosome segregation. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. Forensic Context
A study in Sprague-Dawley rats demonstrated that the KIF2C was identified as a key gene present in all four defined index sets (A, B, C, D) for wound age estimation following skeletal muscle contusion [Ren et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2022.102722]. Separately, a transcriptomic analysis in humans found that the KIF2C was downregulated as part of the inhibited oxidative stress-induced senescence pathway in the lungs of patients who succumbed to septic shock [Pinheiro da Silva et al. DOI:10.1111/jcmm.17938].
