Summary

Keratins are intermediate filament proteins responsible for the structural integrity of epithelial cells and are subdivided into epithelial keratins and hair keratins. This gene encodes an epithelial keratin that is expressed in the skin and eccrine sweat glands. The type II keratins are clustered in a region of chromosome 12q13.[provided by RefSeq, Jun 2009]

Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that KRT77 is expressed in sweat gland clusters in skin wound-edge tissues as identified by spatial transcriptomic sequencing [Liu et al. DOI:10.1016/j.stem.2024.11.013]. In a separate forensic mRNA profiling collaborative exercise, KRT77 was analyzed as a skin identification marker and was correctly detected in human skin samples [Salzmann et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2020.102409].
