Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the biomarker LCE1C is a highly sensitive and specific mRNA marker for skin identification, detectable down to 5 pg of input total RNA from skin and in swabs of touched objects [Hanson et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2012.01.004]. Further research confirmed its utility for inferring the skin origin of touched contact traces, as it was successfully detected in mock casework samples like mobile phones and keyboards, though its expression level did not correlate with DNA yield [Akutsu et al. DOI:10.1016/j.legalmed.2018.05.003]. Furthermore, research in human skin showed that expression of the LCE1C decreases in a time-dependent manner, making it useful for early post-mortem interval estimation up to five days [Scrivano et al.
