Summary

The protein encoded by this gene catalyzes the conversion of (S)-2,3 oxidosqualene to lanosterol. The encoded protein is a member of the terpene cyclase/mutase family and catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of cholesterol, steroid hormones, and vitamin D. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.[provided by RefSeq, Feb 2009]

Forensic Context

A study in mice demonstrated that alcohol exposure significantly up-regulated the LSS expression in alcoholic liver disease, and this up-regulation was inhibited by treatment with Gentiana dahurica Fisch ethanol extract [Cao et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Jep.2020.113422]. In a separate systems toxicology analysis using Apoe-/- mice, cigarette smoke exposure was found to up-regulate the LSS protein, an effect associated with dysregulated cholesterol biosynthesis that was reduced upon switching to a modified risk tobacco product [Lo Sasso et al. DOI:10.3109/08958378.2016.1150368].
