Summary

This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the microtubule-associated protein family. The proteins of this family are thought to be involved in microtubule assembly, which is an essential step in neurogenesis. The products of similar genes in rat and mouse are neuron-specific cytoskeletal proteins that are enriched in dentrites, implicating a role in determining and stabilizing dentritic shape during neuron development. A number of alternatively spliced variants encoding distinct isoforms have been described. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2010]

Forensic Context

A study in human postmortem brain tissue identified molecular networks associated with lifetime alcohol consumption, where the MAP2 was positively coexpressed with SCN4B isoforms in the alcoholic prefrontal cortex [Farris et al. DOI:10.1038/Mp.2014.159]. In a separate human model, MAP2 was validated as a neuronal characterization marker via positive immunofluorescent staining in induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neurons [Mendez et al. DOI:10.3389/Fpsyt.2023.1070556]. A study in mouse fetal cortical-derived neural stem cells demonstrated that ethanol exposure increased expression of the MAP2 mRNA, a neuronal maturation marker, and this increase was mimicked by overexpression of the mOct4pg9 ncRNA [Salem et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Ntt.2020.106943].
