This gene is a member of the apolipoprotein L gene family. The encoded protein is found in the cytoplasm, where it may affect the movement of lipids or allow the binding of lipids to organelles. Forensic Context
A study in humans demonstrated that the APOL2 transcript was downregulated -1.4 to -1.5-fold in the dopamine cell-enriched ventral midbrain of chronic cocaine abusers compared to controls, and its expression level was diagnostic for assigning subject cohorts [Bannon et al. DOI:10.1038/Npp.2014.70].
