Forensic Context
A study in humans demonstrated that the MIOX is a circular RNA marker specifically expressed in urine for body fluid identification [Song et al. DOI:10.1007/s00414-023-03091-1]. This marker, along with other RNA types, enables robust forensic identification with specificities up to 100% when combined in multiplex assays, and such small non-coding RNAs offer greater stability in degraded material compared to mRNA [Courts et al. DOI:10.3238/arztebl.m2024.0051].
