This gene encodes a member of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family of proteins. These proteins are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes, such as arthritis and metastasis. Proteolysis at different sites on this protein results in multiple active forms of the enzyme with distinct N-termini. This protein functions in the degradation of type I, II and III collagens. The gene is part of a cluster of MMP genes which localize to chromosome 11q22.3. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2015]
A study in human burn wound tissue using spatial transcriptomics identified the MMP8 as part of a neutrophil-expressed gene signature specifically expressed in the superficial region of the wound [Junak et al. DOI:10.1111/wrr.70061]. Separately, RNA-sequencing of human peripheral blood from sepsis patients demonstrated that the MMP8 was upregulated compared to healthy controls [Qin et al. DOI:10.1097/JCMA.0000000000000209]. A study in mice demonstrated that the MMP8 showed a significant increase at 24 hours and 5 days, but not at 6 hours, after paraquat exposure, classifying it as a late marker of pulmonary injury in this model [Tomita et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Tox.2006.12.005]. In human forensic research, the MMP8 was not among the five menstrual fluid mRNA markers investigated for time-dependent detection over the uterine cycle [Albani et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Fsigen.2020.102359].
