This gene encodes an intracellular protein that interacts with members of the MORF4/MRG (mortality factor on chromosome 4/MORF4 related gene) family and the tumor suppressor Rb (retinoblastoma protein.) The protein may play a role in senescence, cell growth and immortalization. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2013]
A study in human blood samples demonstrated that the MRFAP1 was incorporated as one of nine reference genes in the initial primer design for a targeted massively parallel sequencing assay aimed at forensic age estimation, and it was included in the final validated primer pool of seven reference genes due to its stable expression in blood across the age range of 23 to 73 years [Hänggi et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2025.103282]. The final age prediction model, utilizing elastic net regression on dSVA-normalized data from this assay, achieved a mean absolute error of 9.29 years.
