MYL3 encodes myosin light chain 3, an alkali light chain also referred to in the literature as both the ventricular isoform and the slow skeletal muscle isoform. Mutations in MYL3 have been identified as a cause of mid-left ventricular chamber type hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
A study in human cadavers demonstrated that mRNA expression of the MYL3 was significantly higher in the anterior wall of the right ventricle in sudden cardiac death cases with confirmed acute myocardial infarction compared to those without [González-Herrera et al. DOI:10.1016/j.forsciint.2019.109876]. A study in human cadavers demonstrated that the MYL3 gene exhibited significant differences in expression between postmortem interval (PMI) groups, with higher expression at longer PMI periods (>12 hours) in blood and heart tissue samples [Gonzalez-Herrera et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Forsciint.2013.08.001]. In a separate study using model organisms, linear regression analyses of gene expression groups, which included specific transcripts, provided accurate PMI predictions, with an 11-gene set in zebrafish yielding an R² of 1 and a 7-gene set in mouse liver yielding an R² of 0.98 [Hunter et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Forsciint.2017.02.027].
