The protein encoded by this gene is a subunit of the multisubunit NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I). Mammalian complex I is composed of 45 different subunits. It locates at the mitochondrial inner membrane. This protein has NADH dehydrogenase activity and oxidoreductase activity. It transfers electrons from NADH to the respiratory chain. The immediate electron acceptor for the enzyme is believed to be ubiquinone. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2011]
Forensic Context
A study in mice demonstrated that the NDUFB5 is stabilized by METTL3 and IGF2BP2 m6A modification, reversing AGE-induced inhibition of endothelial cell function and accelerating diabetic wound healing [Zhang et al. DOI:10.7150/ijbs.114988]. In a separate investigation in rats, the NDUFB5 was identified as a metabolism gene involved in mitochondrial electron transport and exhibited significantly altered expression on day 4 following a 20% total body surface area burn injury [Jayaraman et al. DOI:10.1016/j.jss.2007.05.025].
